Location
A Welcoming Haven
In the eighteenth century, Bishop‘s Stortford was made a stagecoach stop on the mail coach road between Cambridge and London, and for good reason: the town sits near the eastern border of Hertfordshire, midway between these two cities. The convenience of its location ensured Bishop‘s Stortford quickly developed into a thriving market town and corn exchange, and the town centre has retained many features from this period of growth.
Bishop‘s Stortford is still a desirable location, and not just because of its proximity to London. It is perfectly located for access to Stansted airport, less than six miles away from the terminal. The M11 is just minutes away too, providing first-class links to the M25 to the south and Cambridge to the north. If you are London bound, the City can be reached in 45 minutes with trains running directly to Liverpool St Station.
Bishop‘s Stortford is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with many winding lanes and river walks offering a peaceful retreat from the bustle of everyday life. Despite being so close to London, the town retains a real community feel that no doubt contributes to crime rates being well below the national average.
- Bishop‘s Stortford has a bustling town centre brimming with familiar high street names, fabulous boutiques and independent stores. Thursdays see Market Square come alive as people seek out the best produce from local traders, and there are a number of major retail centres slightly further afield, such as Chelmsford, Braintree Freeport and Harlow.
- Foodies are very well catered for, with Spanish, Italian, Cantonese, Portuguese and French cuisine all available in the town centre as well as a number of popular restaurant brands.
- Sworders Field is the setting for many community events throughout the year, including the much-loved annual summer carnival.
- Castle Gardens is an elegant floral display in the grounds of Sworders Field, which during the Middle Ages was home to Waytemore Castle. Sadly, all that remains of the castle is the large earth mound on which it stood.
- Bishop‘s Stortford Golf Club is just minutes from Sworders Place, The Manor of Groves course near Sawbridgeworth is a short drive away, as is Hanbury Manor, one of the UK‘s top country clubs.
