• Get healthy at Southbury Leisure Centre in nearby Enfield. This multi-million pound venue has a 25m swimming pool, steam room and sauna; fully equipped and air conditioned gym with over 80 stations; sports hall for badminton, table tennis, basketball and hockey; two floodlit all-weather synthetic pitches; and a children’s adventure play area.
• Take a stroll along the River Lea. Start at Waltham Town Lock, the home of canoeing at the 2012 Olympics; pass Enfield lock; and finish at Ponders End for refreshments. Then hop on a train back to Waltham Cross.
• Master the 18 lush greens at Cheshunt Golf Club, a short drive north.
• Explore the Abbey Gardens and Church, Cornmill Meadows Dragonfly Sanctuary and Tree Park in neighbouring Waltham Abbey. The market town has an excellent range of cafés and restaurants, and is home to the Royal Gunpowder Mills – a fascinating interactive exhibition covering the history of the explosive.
